Sygneus is an award-winning Shrewsbury-based consultancy that helps deep-tech and defence engineering companies turn breakthroughs into commercial businesses. Founder Jack Ryan is a Chartered Engineer, a Human-Robot Interaction researcher at the University of Bath, and Shropshire's Young Business Person of the Year 2026.
AT-A-GLANCE
- Industry: Deep-Tech and Defence Commercialisation Consultancy
- Scale (Size): SME
- Legacy Replacements: Google transition to a fully managed Microsoft 365 environment + labdesk's M365 Accelerator + IT and technology advisory
- Primary ROI: "The thing that's going to take labdesk 20 minutes is going to take you two days" — Jack Ryan, Founder, Sygneus
"You're wanting to work in energy and nuclear in the UK.
Well, here's a strategic partner, an IT company that specialises in servicing nuclear and energy businesses in the UK. They do 24/7 global support."
PARTNER JOURNEY
- The Challenge: A founder-led consultancy growing into defence and nuclear, where clients expect to see how their data is handled rather than be told it's taken care of.
- The Solution: labdesk's Microsoft 365 Accelerator consolidated a fragmented estate into one managed environment, with security controls and user management to match.
- The Result: Sygneus runs on IT foundations Jack no longer administers himself, saving him time he can now spend on winning and delivering work impacting innovative enterprises globally
INTRODUCTION
Jack Ryan founded Sygneus in 2022 on a straightforward observation. Brilliant engineers and scientists were struggling to get breakthrough technology adopted, and the reason was rarely the science. It was procurement, regulation, and markets that reward credibility as much as capability.
So he built a specialist consultancy to close that gap. Sygneus represents deep-tech organisations working in robotics, lasers, AI sensing and advanced manufacturing, among them Laser Optical Engineering, Nexxis, Digital Concepts Engineering and ICE9 Robotics. The advisory bench Jack has assembled around the firm includes a former Chief Inspector for Science and Technology at the Home Office, a Chartered Engineer who led world-first robotics deployments at nuclear sites, and a serial entrepreneur with 6 exits, 8 investment rounds and 2 MBOs to his name.
"We work with organisations that are in defence, nuclear, security and intelligence, and other kinds of high-trust markets."
Sygneus holds commercially sensitive material for companies whose own customers examine everything, so Jack needed an IT partner who already understood that world.
CHALLENGES
As Sygneus grew into defence, nuclear and other high-trust markets, Jack took stock of the foundations underneath the business that needed assistance:
- Fragmented Systems: Email accounts and Microsoft services had accumulated as Sygneus took on scaling work, with no single point of centralised management.
- Founder capacity at its limit: Jack was running delivery and business development, with the technology underneath both landing on his desk as well.
- Knowing what you don't know: Jack is clear-eyed that information security is where he needed consultation from sector experts to develop his business on secure foundations.
Jack's analogy for building a bridge is a great example of how most businesses in regulated sectors quietly mistake understanding their IT:
"With IT, it's a little bit like me saying, well, I'm a Chartered Engineer, therefore I should be able to design this bridge.
I've never designed a bridge in my life.
I don't know the first thing about designing bridges.
But if I just want to wave around the 'well, I'm a Chartered Engineer, I'm a technical person', I'll have a crack, outwardly it might all looks good. But I wouldn't trust the bridge."
CONSEQUENCES
Without a change, Sygneus faced several risks:
- Founder days skewed into administration rather than winning and delivering new business
- Security gaps surfacing unannounced during a client review or an audit
- Bottlenecks forming as headcount grows and systems become less effective
- Confidence in sector-specific business setup resting on belief rather than on concrete evidence
"Most people spend at least 20% of their week fiddling with something that is actually quite tangential to either winning work or delivering the work, the core function of that business."
SOLUTIONS
Enter labdesk. The two had met a couple of years earlier at a nuclear decommissioning event in Telford, where Mike was handing out bundles of #GetITDone labdesk foil stickers from a stand Jack remembers as filled to the brim with labdesk goodies. labdesk's enthusiasm for IT made an impression on Jack, and they began a sustained conversation about cybersecurity.
When the requirement arose for an IT partner he could trust and who met his criteria for sector experience, Jack knew who he wanted to call.
"Now that I have a requirement to do this, I want to work with people that are genuinely good people, not just as far as the IT, but working with a like-minded, fun and entrepreneurial team like at labdesk."
JACK RYAN,
FOUNDER, SYGNEUS
Sygneus leveraged labdesk to:
- Build a fully managed Microsoft 365 environment, consolidating scattered email accounts and unmanaged Microsoft services into one place
- Install labdesk's Microsoft 365 Accelerator, establishing consistent security controls, user management and device standards
- Manage devices properly in the background, including the personal and shared hardware that small firms genuinely run on
- Run cyber awareness training and keep the supporting policies modernised
- Advise on security, policy and technology decisions as the business keeps growing
For Jack, the honest value working with labdesk showed up in time saved and confidence reclaimed in the business's IT setup:
"You've then got free rein to go and do the thing that you set out to do in the first place, rather than wrangling with all the other challenges around your business. It's head space as much as time."
JACK RYAN,
FOUNDER, SYGNEUS
"Could you do it yourself?
Yes, but the thing that's going to take labdesk 20 minutes is going to take you two days. And at the end of it you're not going to have that certification."
THE RESULTS
- Consolidated scattered email accounts and unmanaged Microsoft services into one environment
- Strengthened Microsoft security controls, user management and device standards across the business
- Reduced the founder's time going into IT administration and policy work
- Signalled subtle professionalism to clients through simple managed access rather than open links sharing documents
- Freed Jack of time-intensive compliance setup that was quietly eating his week
- Enabled Jack to focus on winning and delivering work as the business grows with an embedded IT partner
"Stop wasting your time trying to do everything, and bring in support for core business functions like IT where it makes sense.
Take yourself as seriously as you want others to take you. In the case of cyber security, I'd suggest take yourself quite seriously."

See what the labdesk 365 Accelerator looks like on a 30-minute demo:
- Bid for work you currently can't — compliance evidenced, not assumed.
- Get your own days back — certification handled by people who do it weekly.
- Show clients how you handle data — managed access, not shared links.
